Stacking IBC Container - All about stacking height, stacking weight, ...

In advance you should know: Not all IBC containers are stackable!

Decisive for this is the construction of the IBC container as well as the condition and the filling medium.

Factor 1: Nestability of the pallet

Basically, IBC containers are assembled with a pallet. In order to stack the IBC tanks safely, the containers have so-called "nestable" pallets. The nestability of the pallets comes about because the skids of the pallet have recesses on the underside and are thus "snapped" onto the frame of the grid box of the underlying IBC container. The recesses on the pallet usually have some clearance to ensure manufacturer compatibility. This gives the IBC containers minimal maneuverability and this also facilitates stacking with a forklift. Thanks to the nestability, uncontrolled slipping of the stacked IBC tanks is prevented.

Of course, there are also IBC containers that do not have nestable pallets. Here we strongly advise against stacking these tanks! If you do not know whether the pallet of your IBC container is nestable, take a look at the pallet.

Stackable wooden pallet: These usually have beveled edges of the bottom timbers.

Stackable plastic pallet: By lifting the IBC container slightly, you can see whether the skids of the pallet have a rounded underside. The reason the bottom of the skid is rounded is to allow the pallet to lock onto the round grid frame of the IBC. The outside of the skid should not be beveled and should extend to the ground. When the IBC tank is stacked, the outside of the skid should extend over the grid frame.

Factor 2: Condition of the IBC container

If your IBC container is in a older condition and the grid box is therefore heavily rusted or deformed, we advise against stacking the IBC tank!

Factor 3: Filling medium in IBC container

Last but not least, the filling medium also determines whether the IBC containers are stackable. How many IBC tanks you can stack depends on the density of the filling medium.
You can basically orientate yourself on the following values:

Static load (resting state of the IBC containers): max. 4 IBC container

Dynamic load (IBC container is on the move):
  • Product density > 1.4: 1 IBC container
  • Product density < 1.4: 2 IBC container
